I first came to acupuncture as a patient for fertility purposes though I had no idea how transformative it was to become. Acupuncture treatment brought me a profound sense of peace and a sensory experience like no other that has had a huge impact on my wellbeing. Two children and just a few years later I found myself drawn even further to its mystical ways and embarked on a degree level course to study Five Element Acupuncture giving up a 15 year career in law.
Having studied Buddhism at the University of Bristol the Daoist roots of Chinese medicine felt wonderfully familiar and I knew I was on the right path.
I started my professional licentiate in acupuncture at the Acupuncture Academy in Leamington Spa in 2023, which is fully accredited by the British Acupuncture Accreditation Board. My training has covered Chinese medical theory, clinical skills, biomedicine, research and professional development.
I am a student member of the British Acupuncture Council which is the UK’s largest professional body for acupuncturists. Members are also registered with the Professional Standards Authority for Health and Social Care (PSA) which is backed by the government.
What is Acupuncture?
Acupuncture is an ancient healing practice rooted in Daoist philosophy, where thin needles are inserted into specific points on the body to balance the flow of vital energy, or “Qi”. Five Element Acupuncture focuses on restoring harmony within the five elemental movements that exist within us all —Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal, and Water—to promote holistic health. This approach helps address physical, emotional, and spiritual imbalances which manifest as pain and illness and by doing so enables the body’s innate healing response to be renewed.
Lasting change is usually achieved with regular sessions as each treatment builds on the previous one.

Skeptical?
Global research has demonstrated that incorporating acupuncture into Western healthcare systems improves patient outcomes. The British Acupuncture Council has published a document to increase awareness of the scope of acupuncture. The core message is that acupuncture is an evidence based healthcare solution and page 45 of this document illustrates the various conditions for which institutional guidelines recommending acupuncture have been published. These include back pain, migraine, knee osteoarthritis and chemo induced nausea and vomiting.
